​The Memory Blocks research project is the result of an attempt to better understand people with dementia through continuous, direct interaction over three months with June, a resident living in the LRH dementia care home in London, and her daughter, Beverly.

​

The only remaining evidence of June’s past life was a photo album that served as a trace of her memories.​

The daughter was overwhelmed with sadness upon realising that her mother could no longer recognise not only her but also other family members.

 

However, through the photo album, there were moments when June’s long-term memories seemed to reawaken, and at those times, the daughter could not have been happier.

 

Thus, the researchers decided to create a more three-dimensional form of a family photo album, hoping it might bring additional joy to the family and open new opportunities to connect with June. This research project was presented as a poster at a conference held at the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of York.
